The 2019 CRF450R is a race machine right out of the crate, no doubt about it. The Honda handles well, has a solid motor, and wraps all that up in a sweet-looking package with excellent finishing touches. But our West Coast staffer Trent Lopez wasn’t about to settle for stock. He’s built more like a linebacker than a racer, so he needed some special attention for the bike. He turned to Teddy Boyko for assistance.

dam and the guys in the Pro Circuit suspension department knew exactly what to do, and they dialed it in. A Pro Circuit TI-6 exhaust system was also used and taken to Boyko so the engine could be built around the exhaust. Boyko ported and polished the head, reflashed the ECU, and installed a Rekluse manual torque drive clutch. FCP engine hangers were used, as was a JE piston and ETS race fuel. The wheelset is Excel rims and spokes and Faster USA hubs. Bridgestone tires were mounted up with Galfer rotors and brake pads. The triple clamp, linkage, and bling are all Ride Engineering products, and they spent a lot of time testing them to make sure they were right. The chain and sprocket are from Renthal; the bars, grips, and handlebar mounts are from ODI. The footpegs and levers are from FLO, the chain guide and sliders are from TM Designworks, and Seat Concepts built the seat for us. Motocutz designed and built our graphics, complete with a Nicky Hayden tribute number, and Works Connection provided some anodized parts for finish and durability. The plastic came from UFO, and Hammerhead Designs provided the shift/brake lever.

On the track, the two things we immediately noticed were the crazy amount of horsepower and the incredibly stiff suspension. The power was worthy of any top-level national rider. The torque numbers were big, the throttle response was sharp, and the thing revved to the moon; it made power everywhere. I can’t speak to the suspension because it didn’t feel like there was any. I could barely get it to move through the stroke—not enough lead in my pencil, as my dad would say. The brakes were great, the pegs and controls all felt perfect, the Bridgestone Battlecross X30s felt really stable while cornering and under heavy throttle, and the clutch action from the Rekluse was strong and predictable. The bike was even faster than it looked and probably more than I could use. As such, I was almost scared to hand it off to Trent for his test ride.

“Man, that thing is a rocket!” were Trent’s first words when he pried his fingers from the tacky ODI grips. “It’s like you don’t even have to touch the clutch on this thing and it wants to go. I felt comfortable on it right away though. It really had a firm, race-bike type of feel to it. I don’t know any other way to describe it.”

“It’s perfect for me,” Trent said of the suspension. “I usually have trouble getting anybody to make it stiff enough, but Pro Circuit nailed it. I felt confident that it wouldn’t bottom, and it made me feel like I could push harder. I’m stoked!”

It was smiles all around after we each had our turns on the bike. Thanks to all the companies involved for helping to create a unique and high-performance Garage Build project. See the full test at racerxonline.com.
