REMEMBERING JONATHAN

On the evening before the GEICO Motorcycle Budds Creek National, hundreds of people from the paddock showed up in the staging area for a candlelight vigil. They were remembering Jonathan Mayzak, the 20-year-old privateer racer from South Carolina who lost his life the previous weekend in a traffic accident at Unadilla in New York. On the night before that race, Mayzak was crossing the road near the entrance of the track when he was struck by an automobile. At Budds Creek, many of his fellow riders and racing friends gathered to light candles and sparklers and release balloons as minister Jake Vanada talked about Jonathan’s life. Godspeed, Jonathan.

MOTIVATIONAL SIGN

On the morning of the August 17 Budds Creek National, the Monster Energy Kawasaki team had a message for their rider Joey Savatgy. Actually, it was for his wife, Megan, who was about to deliver the couple’s first child. As a matter of fact, Joey Savatgy wasn’t even at Budds, as the team excused him from the next-to-last race of the season so he could be with Megan. At 6:40 a.m. the next morning they welcomed daughter River Rose Savatgy, who tipped the scales at 7 lbs. 8 oz. Welcome to the team, River Rose! Both mother and daughter—and father—were doing fine, and Joey was back at the track for the Ironman finale, where he finished a series-best fourth overall.
