I

f you haven’t had a chance to watch or listen to The Whiskey Throttle Show yet, I hope you’ll check it out. I wanted to introduce a long-form interview show that was filmed and edited, and also shot in front of a live studio audience occasionally, to give fans the opportunity to get to know the best current riders, as well as the legends of motocross. To date we’ve had Roger DeCoster, Rick Johnson, Adam Cianciarulo, Eli Tomac, Jeff Emig, Jim “Bones” Bacon, Cole Seely, Ryan Hughes, and Ben Townley on the show, and they have all been incredibly candid and open—even Eli, who doesn’t normally say much! Our guest list for the next six months is going to be incredible. Off-road legend Malcolm Smith is one of the guests I’m really looking forward to. We’re lucky being in Southern California, where many of the current and former motocross racers and industry personnel live; it’s pretty easy to get them in to the Troy Lee Designs Saloon for the show. But there are some riders we’ll never get to talk to, and I wish I could hop in a DeLorean, fire up my flux capacitor, and go back in time to bring them back.

Whose story would you want to hear? I think the first guy I’d want to join us in the studio is Rich Thorwaldson. The former factory Suzuki rider was my grandfather’s cousin, making him a relative of mine. Rich was an amazing rider, finishing second in the 250cc national championship in 1973. We’d have plenty to chat about, including our Scandinavian heritage, my grandfather, and our runner-up finishes. Rich passed away in a road racing accident in 2004.

I’d also love to bring Donny Schmit on set. Donny was an incredible man and a highly underrated motocross racer. I’ve studied his results and watched VHS tapes of his most impressive rides, but I never got to know Donny before he passed away suddenly in 1996.

Or what about Marty Moates? I’ve heard he was quite a character, and I would love to ask him about his 1980 win at the Carlsbad 500cc USGP. Marty rode the wheels off his LOP Yamaha that day and etched his name in the record books and into motocross lore. What would he say about that weekend? What was eating at him so badly that he would take his own life?

Eric Geboers, Nicky Hayden, Danny “Magoo” Chandler, and fellow racer-turned-firefighter Chuck “Feets” Minert would all be on my short list too. There are video clips or brief interviews with most of these icons, but not likely anything digitally preserved and done in long-form interview style, where you could really get to know them as humans. That’s a travesty to me, because these are extraordinary men who lived extraordinary lives.

I can’t hit 88 mph in a stainless-steel car and go back in time, but you can rest assured we’ll be doing everything we can to get every single living motocross legend in our studio so we can all get to know them better. I hope you’ll tune in and go along for the ride with us.
