Racer X: Max, how was your 2019 season?
Max Miller: I started out the season with an ACL injury. I got back on the bike last February, and I just put in the work from there. I rode the 250B class from the beginning of the year to Loretta’s, and I had a pretty consistent year of podiums. I rode a few A-class races and was happy with the results.

What was the transition like going from 250B to 250A?
It was really exciting, honestly; I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. I think it’s cool that instead of getting a little plastic trophy you get a check at the end of the day! You also never know who you’ll be racing against. Could be old pros, guys you’ve been racing forever, or just riders that are somewhere in the middle. It’s really exciting.

What do you feel sets you apart from other 250A riders?
Something that I’ve been noticing over the last couple of weeks, especially at Mini O’s, is my ability to really mesh with the track late in the motos. Most guys sprint really hard in the beginning of the motos and kind of fall off the pace toward the end, so that’s where I was able to pick up the pace and really make passes. I’ve been grinding with Randy Lawrence in the gym and Nathan Ramsey on the track, so I feel like my fitness level is high, and my overall riding ability plays a big part in that.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk about 2020. What are your plans?
My main focus toward the beginning of the year will be on Supercross Futures so I can get my SX license, and then I’ll be back to the basics getting ready to race the A classes for spring nationals. In between the spring nationals and Loretta Lynn’s, if I’m feeling up to speed, I might hit three of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross races now that it’s legal. It will be exciting to see where I stack up against the rest of the pro guys. I’m also thinking about going to some of the Canadian nationals depending on how Loretta’s goes. Lots going on, and I’m super excited to get to it!

How do you spend your free time away from racing?
Honestly, I don’t have a ton of time on my hands. I’m still in high school, so a lot of my time off the bike is dedicated to doing homework, but when I’m not doing that, I like to go mountain biking. Also, I finally decided to pull the trigger and got a BMX bike, so I’m going to be spending some time on the local pump track/dirt jumps near me. Other than that, I just hang with my buddies and maybe rip some go-karts now and again.
