ome changes have been made to scheduling and the rulebook for the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship—most obviously the venue changes in Southern California to Fox Raceway at Pala on May 25, and then the brand-new stop at WW Ranch in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 22. Fox Raceway has actually held two nationals (2010 and ’11), but this is the first for WW Ranch, as well as the first time an AMA Pro Motocross race had been held in the Sunshine State since 1997.

The 125 All Star Series program has expanded to all 12 rounds and will be open to both expert and intermediate riders over the age of 15, as well as former professionals. Look for the likes of Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Sipes, Wil Hahn, Josh Hansen, and more to line up with a bunch of fast kids at some point this summer.

On the sponsorship front, MX Sports Pro Racing announced in April that riders and race teams could procure sponsorship from cannabidiol-related companies (aka CBD), which was something of a hot potato in Monster Energy AMA Supercross for riders like Dean Wilson, who was personally sponsored by Ignite, and Chad Reed (cbdMD). But there are restrictions, as the CBD product must be derived exclusively from hemp, a member of the cannabis plant family that does not contain more than 0.3 percent of THC, the compound most commonly associated with the psychoactive effects. And because there are different laws in practically every state involving how and where you can market CBD products, their logos can’t be on the motorcycles or the riders’ on-track racing gear. Expect that to change as soon as the laws are relaxed.

And maybe the most exciting change of all is that younger expert-level riders who want to test the waters in AMA Pro Motocross—but also remain eligible for the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch—will be able to enter up to three rounds before August and gain as many as 40 points before they have to choose between continuing in the pro series or entering the amateur national. That means fans are likely to catch glimpses of some very fast prospects.
