he 2019 Suzuki is a big step forward from last year, but it has its issues. Primarily, the RM-Z250 is massively over-sprung—an easy fix, but it has to be addressed. And while the engine is noticeably better than the 2018 version, we wanted to boost the numbers a bit more.
We started our build by focusing on the handling. We took what we learned from our Dialed In video earlier in the year and had the crew at Factory Connection drop softer fork and shock springs in. They massaged the settings to go along with the spring rate change, and we were confident they would hit the mark. For the motor, we kept it simple and added a Vertex high-compression piston and an FMF 4.1 exhaust system. While not necessary, we ran VP U4.4 fuel to improve throttle response and peak power. Those were the only changes we made to the powerplant.
The look of this machine was all Langers and he got plastics from Acerbis and designed his own graphics, utilizing the boys at D’Cor Visuals to build them. Works Connection supplied us with anodized parts to tie the look together, including bar clamps, clutch perch, chain adjuster blocks, and brake caps. We ran the stock wheelset, which is cool-looking and durable. We added a Supersprox chain and sprocket and Dunlop tires to complete the wheels. Renthal set us up with bars and grips, Scar sent us titanium footpegs for a better platform, and Uni provided the air filter for better flow.
The thing looks trick, and on the track it has the feel of a potent race bike. The engine mods, though subtle, give the Suzuki engine a little bit extra everywhere and leave it very easy to ride. The durability is there as well, which goes a long way for us. The suspension is a bit soft, which is to be expected since it’s set up for Langers. The pegs/bars/grips/seat and overall feel of the bike are phenomenal and really make you feel comfortable on the track. To me, comfortable means I’m having fun. But since it was Langers’ bike, I felt like he needed to give us some feedback.
“I was stoked on the way the bike felt straight away,” Langers said with a smile. “I wanted something easy to ride since I’m just getting back into riding after an injury. I’m also quite light, so I was worried the suspension would be too stiff. The Factory Connection guys killed it, though, and it handled perfectly. I can’t wait to put some more time on this bike.”
