Maryland’s Jarrett Frye has had a successful past couple of months. Over Thanksgiving week he locked down five championships at the THOR Winter Olympics in Gainesville, Florida, and then shortly after earned himself a spot on the Star Racing Yamaha amateur squad for 2019. We caught up with the young rider to chat about his success, his new team, and more.

Racer X: The Mini Os went very well for you. What can you tell us about it?
Jarrett Frye: I had a super week. My starts were really good and I was able to put myself in the front all except one moto in supercross.

What do you attribute your success to?
MTF has been big in my training program. Having my brother as my mechanic and traveling with me. Of course, maturity helps too.

What does winning five championships at Mini Os do for your confidence heading into next season?
It’s huge—I know I can run up top and be a factor. I just have to keep putting it all together.

You just recently transitioned to the Star Racing Yamaha team. How has that change been for you?
The change has been really good so far. I’m getting used to the bike, working on setup, and learning the team. I’m excited.

What are your plans for the rest of the winter?
I will be back and forth between Cali and MTF. I may do some SX Futures depending on timing, but really focused on the bike setup and Spring Nationals.

Did you feel pressure to win at Gatorback or did it just come naturally?
I really like Gatorback and seem to do well there. The MX track reminds me of my hometown track, Budds Creek, with the steep hills.

What’s the thing you’re looking forward to the most about riding a 250F now?
Just being on a big bike—the power and getting really comfortable. I will be on this thing for a while.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions?
I always like to ride around and check parts of the track out, the conditions, and see what other riders are doing, good and bad. My mom is very superstitious, so I leave that up to her.
